For the first time in 2016, BCC took part in WAATI (WA Assoc of Teachers of Italian) Exchange program which saw three of our Italian students, Natalie Botteon -Peruch, Jessica Carbone and Nick Pemberton, fly to Italy to be immersed in the Italian culture and language for eight weeks over the summer break.
Nick went to Sardinia and stayed with Silvio, whom the Pemberton family had hosted in Australia. “Sardinia is a very beautiful island and is famous for it’s beaches. They speak a dialect there and so I had to adjust to that which was a bit difficult at the beginning but I learnt quickly. ” Nick studied Italian at St Mary’s, Donnybrook and then in Years 8, 9 and 10 at BCC. “One of the highlights for me was our four night trip to Florence.”
Jessica stayed in a town two hours south of Milan and Natalie in a town two hours north of Milan, which allowed her to visit Switzerland for the afternoon, one of her highlights.
BCC had previously welcomed nine Italian exchange students in 2016 who became part of our community for eight weeks, joining classes with Year 10 and Year 11 students and staying with BCC families. This was a great opportunity for our students to meet the international visitors, help them practice their English and for our language students to practice their Italian.
