Mercy Campus celebrated its 3rd annual Mercy on Show on Thursday the 14th September, opening its doors to the community with a varied range of inspiring learning area displays including languages (Italian and Indonesian) Science, Arts and Technologies exhibition, performances by Dance, Drama and Music students and tours of the campus.
Mercy on Show offered the Arts and Technologies students a wonderful opportunity to show-case their amazing talents. The Angela Costello breakout area was transformed into a gallery housing the impressive works of Wood, Metal, Art, Digital Technology and Media students. Side tables, trivets and glassware were amongst the items on display from the Design & Technology students. Digital Technology students in Year 8 used a graphic design software program (Inkscape) to design and create a logo for a new business, the ‘BCC Bakery’ and the Year 9 students used an online platform to learn the programming language ‘Python’. Year 7 Visual Arts students produced beautiful rustic looking angels, Year 8 student’s paintings and ceramic houses, batiks and mixed media pieces were created by the talented year 9’s and colourful screen prints were exhibited by year 10 students. Fabulous photography exploring every aspect of the Mercy Campus environment and its inhabitants created a vibrant and interesting display. All students should be extremely proud of the skills and techniques that they have learnt throughout their courses that culminate in such impressive products, artworks and photography.
With beautiful weather, students from Dance, Drama and Music were able to share their talents in an open-air concert setting which was perfectly situated adjacent to the Arts and Technology exhibition. There were many talented performers. Two worthy of mention for captivating the audience were David Kiss and Jayden Cosenza who performed a task set within their Drama course. Lip Syncing and acting, David gave the audience a fantastic performance of Michael Jackson costumed with glove and executing dance moves, while Jayden performed an amazing Beyoncé item dressed in heels, wig and sequins. The standout Singer /Musician of the night was Tom Eddy performing two songs ‘Waves’ on keyboard and ‘I see Fire’ with his guitar. The calibre of Dance was amazing and a representation of the time and effort put into each routine by the dancers and their teacher.
The foods and Barista students under the watchful eyes of Mrs Ritchie and Mrs Tompson did an excellent job of making and serving both food and coffee to hungry parents, staff, students and the public.
A heartfelt word of thanks is extended to all staff who assisted to make this event such a memorable experience for the students. In particular we would like to thank Mr Hart and Mr Alietti for transporting display boards and plinths from Marist to Mercy and to Ms McKenzie for making hundreds of labels for student work and assisting in the hanging and displaying of photographs, artworks and other tasks too numerous to mention. Ms Delle Donne was an amazing asset on Wednesday giving up her time at Marist to help set up the exhibition space, hang and display artwork. We are extremely grateful too for the assistance, contribution and support of the HOLA’S of each Learning area and HOY’S from Mercy. Several year 10 students were released from their classes on Thursday to assist with setting up the exhibition, organising musical equipment and to complete baking requirements. The student assistance was greatly appreciated; thank you to the teachers who allowed their students this valuable experience and insight into what it takes to put on an event of this magnitude.
