South West High Schools Cup

13 Jun 2017

Jacqui Granger News, Sport sport

The Certificate II Sport and Recreation class had an excellent day helping run the South West High Schools Cup Netball Carnival yesterday.

These students were involved in every facet of the carnival, playing, umpiring, Customer Service in canteen, collating premiership tables, central timing and even using their newly acquired First Aid certificates.

Special thanks to Sue Howard for all her hard work to get the carnival up and running and to the Yr. 12 students for their excellent help.

These classes also had the added bonus of being able to represent the College, with two teams in the Boys Open Division.  This is a very rare opportunity as normally there are not enough boy’s teams.

Both BCC boys teams had won 2 games and lost 1, meeting in the final game of the pool round. Whoever won this game, would earn the right to play in the Boys Open grand final and represent the South West at elimination day in Perth in Term 3.  At the end of the first half, BCC 1 was down by about 6 goals. A change through centre court, and a swap in defence and shooting, somehow managed to resurrect BCC 1 who levelled the game in the dying minutes, where they then went goal for goal. At the final siren BCC 1 had clenched a one goal victory. They went into the grand final against MacKillop Catholic College who were undefeated. BCC 1 played their best game of the day, winning by 1 goal to become South West High Schools Cup Premiers, the first time in history a BCC Boys team has done so.

The Touring Team were undefeated throughout the day, playing 6 games in a round robin. They finished at the top of the table being the South West Premiers. They have earned the right to represent the South West at Elimination Day in Perth in Term 3. The touring team continues to represent the South West as it has for the last 10 years, if not longer.

Even though we had 13 teams representing the College on the day, only two teams will go through to Perth.  It was a fantastic day for all the players and we cannot thank the coaches (many parents and teachers) and umpires enough for their support and sportsmanship throughout the day.
