Mathematics Takes Centre Stage
Numbers, problem-solving and a strong sense of community came alive in the College as students and staff celebrated Maths Week.
During Week 6 of Term 1, students enthusiastically engaged in activities designed to challenge their thinking and showcase the fun side of mathematics.
Highlights
- The Estimation Challenge, where students tested their ability to make clever and informed guesses — the Lolly Jar guessing game was won by Year 7 students Fatima Termizi and Asher Chalk;
- Daily Quizzes which kept minds sharp; and
- The Chess Club provided a space for strategic thinking and friendly competition. Students were given the opportunity to challenge one of Bunbury Chess Club’s members, Maths Teacher Matt Caden, who played games against three students at once.
Adding to the excitement, the College Canteen embraced the theme with a creative twist, offering mathematics-inspired treats that were fun and memorable — A’cute’ Triangle Chicken Parcels, Fraction Pesto Pizzas & Parallel Paninis.
This whole-school approach helped create a positive and engaging atmosphere around mathematics.
Maths Week celebrations culminated in Bunbury Catholic College proudly hosting the Year 9 and 10 ‘Have Sum Fun’ mathematics competition.
Schools from across the South West gathered for this quiz-style event, challenging teams to work collaboratively to solve complex and engaging problems under pressure.
While our College team did not place in this year’s competition, our “Mathletes” demonstrated resilience, teamwork and excellent mathematical thinking throughout the evening.
Equally impressive were the student helpers, who played a vital role in ensuring the smooth running of the event; from organising materials to supporting participants, they represented the College with pride and professionalism.
Mathematics Week was a fantastic success, highlighting the importance of numeracy skills and the joy of learning, collaboration and perseverance.
