“My perception of jazz and music as a whole has been completely changed,” says Bunbury Catholic College ex-student Cacharel Cavan who has just completed her first year at WAAPA.
Cacharel was accepted into the prestigious institution to study for a Diploma of Music at the end of 2024 and left our College to head to Perth at just 15 years of age with aspirations to be a jazz singer and musician.
“I’ve been lucky enough to meet several significant GRAMMY winning/nominated jazz musicians such as Troy Roberts and Linda May Han Oh, even getting to play alongside them,” she said.
“My friends have also been an integral part of my experience. Learning tunes with them and then going out to play with them at a late-night jam session has been incredibly fun and I couldn’t ask for more supportive and talented people.
“I’ve also taken an interest in photography and fashion, making unexpected friendships with the owners of major clothing brands, and shooting for brand events as well as local and international musicians.
“In surrounding myself with successful figures in Perth’s creative scene, I have adapted to the culture and found home in the liveliness of the city. Next year, I’ll be continuing on to do my bachelor’s in Music, and doing honours for my 4th year.”
