FAQs

General Administration

I need to contact my child during the school day. Can I send them a text?

As per standard practice, all communication to and from students during the school day should be through College Administration. Students are required to put their phones away upon arrival at school. If you have an urgent message for your child, please contact the College Administration.

Can my child use their mobile phone at school?

No. Bunbury Catholic College has a strict “off and away” mobile policy. Students are not permitted to use their phones during school hours and must switch them off and keep them secured during school hours, including recess and lunch breaks.

If a student is found using their phone during school hours, the phone will be confiscated and held at College Administration until the end of the day. Repeated breaches will result in further disciplinary action.

I need to collect my child during school hours. What is the procedure?

If your child needs to leave school during the day, a written note from a parent or guardian must be given to the child and shown to their classroom teacher. The student must be collected from Administration – Student Services and signed out by a parent or guardian.

Will my child get a Student Card, and what can it be used for?

Yes. A Student Card with your child’s photograph will be issued. It can be used to access College printers, purchase food and drinks at the Cafeteria, purchase items from the Uniform Shop, and for public bus transport.

My child is going to be absent from school. Do I need to let anyone know?

Yes. Parents must notify Student Services in writing before 9.30am on the day of the absence via SEQTA Absences or by sending an SMS to 0481 883 566.

A medical certificate is required for absences of three or more consecutive days. Parents must also respond to ‘Late’ and ‘Absent’ SMS messages sent out by Student Services if prior notification has not been provided.

Do we need to purchase a computer?

No. Students are provided with a device in Year 7 and receive a replacement device in Year 10. These devices and IT services are funded through school fees.

Where can I find copies of the policies to be followed by College students?

College Policies can be found in the Parent Information section of SEQTA and on our website:  https://www.bunburycatholic.wa.edu.au/about/procedures/

Health and Medical

Does BCC have a nurse on site?

We have a full-time College Nurse located in the Wellness Centre near Administration, available to support students throughout the school day. If a student begins to feel unwell during the day, they should visit the Wellness Centre. The College Nurse will assess their condition and contact parents to arrange collection if needed. If your child is unwell, please do not send them to school.

Students should not contact parents directly during the school day. All communication regarding illness or wellbeing will be managed through the College Nurse or Student Services.

Will my child receive any vaccinations at school?

All Year 7 and Year 10 students will be able to participate in the WA School-Based Immunisation Program. Details about the immunisation day and instructions for accessing the online permission forms will be sent out approximately three weeks prior to the scheduled date. We kindly ask families to submit the forms as soon as possible once received.

Do I notify the school if there is a change to my child’s health status?

Yes. The College Nurse should be notified of any changes to your child’s health or wellbeing, including the commencement of any new medications.

If your child has a medical condition such as diabetes, asthma, anaphylaxis, allergies, or epilepsy, a current medical care plan must be provided to the College and kept up-to-date. This ensures we can offer appropriate support and respond effectively in case of an emergency.

If my child has an EpiPen, what do I need to do?

Parents are required to EpiPen for school use. EpiPens are stored in the Wellness Centre and sent with staff for camps and excursions, along with the student’s current care plan. If your child carries an EpiPen, please notify the College Nurse. Students who self-carry (not preferred) are expected to have their EpiPen with them at all times.

If my child takes medication prior to commencing the school day and they forget to have it, what can I do?

Parents are encouraged to supply a small amount of medication (no more than three tablets) for occasional use. All medications are securely stored in a locked drawer and accessed only by the College Nurse. If your child forgets to take their medication before school and needs to take it during the day, please contact the College prior to administration via phone, email, or SEQTA Direqt Message.

How can my child access a counsellor at the College?

Students can request their first counselling appointment by either:

  • Filling out a Counsellor Request Form at the Wellness Centre, or
  • Sending a SEQTA Direqt Message to a College Counsellor.

Academic

What subjects will my child study?

At Bunbury Catholic College, we offer a broad curriculum designed to challenge and support students at all stages of their secondary education – whether they are just beginning high school or transferring from another school.

All students in Year 7 – 10 study the compulsory core subjects — English, Humanities, Mathematics, Physical Education & Health, Science and Religious Education.

Students in Years 7 to 8 also study a Language (either Italian or Indonesian) as a compulsory part of the curriculum.

In Year 7, students rotate through a variety of elective subjects to explore different areas of interest, while students in Years 8 to 10 select electives tailored to their individual interests and learning goals.

For students entering the College in Years 11 to 12, subject offerings are based on their chosen academic or vocational pathways.

Subject availability may vary depending on the student’s Year level, individual interests, and campus timetable.

For further details, please refer to the Curriculum section of our website.

What languages are offered at Bunbury Catholic College?

We offer Italian and Indonesian as second languages. These courses introduce foundational skills for listening, speaking, reading, and writing, enabling students to communicate in everyday situations, with a particular focus on topics relevant to their age groups and interests. Students will complete a variety of assessments, including speaking, writing and listening tasks.

How can I access SEQTA?

Parents and students can access SEQTA through the online SEQTA Engage platform using login details provided at the start of Term 1. Once logged in, you’ll be able to view your child’s timetable, daily notices, assessment tasks, academic achievements, teacher feedback, and academic reports.

SEQTA also serves as the main communication channel between the school and families via SEQTA Direqt Message, where you can receive important updates from teachers and administration. We recommend checking SEQTA regularly to stay informed about your child’s progress and school events.

How do I track my child’s progress?

Student progress is visible in SEQTA Engage, where parents can view assessment results, reports, and teacher feedback. Students receive an overall grade and course mark in each subject, as well as comments on effort and work habits.

Parent Information Evenings and Parent–Student–Teacher Interviews are held during the year to support communication and goal setting.

Are classes streamed?

English and Mathematics are streamed from Semester 2 in Year 7. This allows teachers to gather academic data during the first two terms to make informed decisions about the most appropriate class placement for each student commencing in Term 3.

We are committed to meeting the individual learning needs of all students, so class placements are reviewed regularly, and students may be moved between streams after Semester 1 if needed.

How can I help my child succeed at BCC?

Support your child in developing a healthy balance between schoolwork, family life, sport, and social activities.

All students receive a Student Diary, which helps them manage homework, assignments, and upcoming events.

After-school tutorials are available for students of all ability levels and are strongly encouraged. Information about tutorials is published early in the school year.

Academic Support

What if my child requires support?

If your child receives a new or updated diagnosis at any time, please ensure this information is shared with the College so we can continue to provide appropriate support.

College Cafeteria

How do students place lunch orders?

The easiest way to place a lunch order is via the Bunbury Catholic College website, using the ‘Shop’ button. Online orders are open for Recess and Lunch. Students who order online benefit from a dedicated fast track queue for pick up.

Alternatively, students can place lunch orders before Homeroom or during Recess by using a paper bag order form, available from the ‘Lunch Orders’ table in the Cafeteria.

The Cafeteria accepts student cards, cash or EFTPOS card for payment. Mobile phones cannot be used for payments.

Where can I find a menu for the Cafeteria?

The menu is available on our website: Cafeteria Menu

The menu is updated each term and can cater for specific dietary requirements. An allergy alert matrix is available upon request.

Does the College Cafeteria need volunteers?

Yes. With your support, we are able to serve students promptly and provide fresh, healthy food at a reasonable price. As a volunteer, you will receive morning tea and lunch in a relaxed and friendly environment. Grandparents are very welcome to volunteer as well.
