Sea Kayaking Camp

Sea Kayaking Camp

Year 12 Certificate II in Outdoor Recreation

The sun was shining as the Year 12 Outdoor Recreation students headed south for their Sea Kayaking Camp at the end of March. (Wednesday 25th March.)

We met Wayne Baddock from Sea Soaring Marine at the Quindalup Boat Ramp and the first trio of students jumped onto the boat to complete the practical component for their Recreational Skipper’s Ticket (RST).

Our paddlers honed their skills before taking an expedition-style paddle to the Old Dunsborough Boat Ramp in the afternoon. Then we made our way to camp at Tasman Holiday Park – Yallingup Caves where the students set up their tents and cooked themselves a hearty meal.

Strong winds on day two meant changing to a new paddling location in the protected waters of Port Geographe Marina which enabled us to rotate students through the boat and kayaks without getting blown out to sea.

Our afternoon session was a little hike along the Cape to Cape track into the beautiful snorkeling spot at the Aquarium in Yallingup. Lots of fish and beautiful rugged coastline were the highlights here.

Day three involved another little hike from Meelup Beach to Castle Rock, and some brave students climbed the rock to enjoy the epic views over Geographe Bay.

We are very proud to say that we had a 100% pass rate for the RST this year, which is a fantastic result. We wish these students many fun and safe boating adventures in the future.

A big thank you to our staff attending camp this year: Michelle Harris, Matt Frisina, Clee Avard and Sydney Lewis for all the extra hard work to plan and conduct these camps are very much appreciated.

Well done to the Year 12 cohort; a great group of students who embraced the activities presented to them.
